Bulb Info: Bearded Iris

I am in awe of the beauty and simplicity of the bearded iris. Until recently I had no idea how to properly care for and grow them. Bearded irises are one of the few bulbs that do not need a chilling period. Many bulbs such as the tulip, daffodil and crocus do need a chilling period before they will bloom, the bearded iris does not. Bearded irises do very well during droughts and they love full sun so they can grow in area where most bulbs cannot. Phoenix, Arizona is well known for it’s dry and very warm conditions, most bulbs cannot survive here but bearded irises can! My grandmother lives in the desert of New River, AZ she has bearded irises growing! I live in Northern Arizona where it is...

Stuffed Eggplant Dinner Recipie

I posted a request for some dinner ideas over at gather.com last week and Cori was nice enough to post several ideas, I became inspired by the ideas and was able to make a fun dinner. Now I am returning the favor! I am not sure if anyone needs dinner ideas tonight but here it goes! This recipe was in our local news paper, the news paper cited the recipe as being from Eating Royally and the article in the paper said this was one of Princess Diana's favorite recipes. I changed the recipe up a bit to suit my own tastes. I used: 3 small eggplants (each about 6 inches long), 1 zucchini, 1 yellow squash, 1 small red onion, 1 pattypan/ sunburst squash, olive oil, 1 large tomato and...

Laundry Detergents for gray water systems

My mother visited me over the weekend. We are all very interested in living a greener more sustainable life and we got to talking about types of "green" laundry detergents that work in front loading washers. My mother uses her gray water in her garden. She lives in the Arizona desert so conserving water is more important than ever but she is concerned about the chemicals in her laundry detergent, she feels they are not good for her plants. I told her I was going to write a blog about some of the tested detergent that are great for gray water systems. Some of the brands I found were: Abundant Earth's Equator Low-Sudsing Biodegradable Laundry Detergent Seventh Generation's Vegetable-based Laundry Detergents ECOS concentrated liquid laundry detergent Charlie's Soap laundry detergent/ powder Ecover biodegradable laundry powder/ detergent Finding a...

You are not the only person on the earth!

Just think of about if you were the only person on the earth… What would you have to do yourself? What conveniences would you have to go without? The drive through Startbucks can’t be without people to work there. Who would work at the grocery store? What would we do without sanitation workers or seamstresses? So many things that we enjoy are only possible because we as a society come together to make those essential things a possibility. Without everyone else we could not have the life we enjoy. Bottom line is that too many people are living inconsiderately these days. Too much is taken for granted. When someone makes an effort to do something for you or to show up somewhere for you do you blow them off? When someone...

Get rid of your clutter today!!

Having too much stuff can defiantly be a problem! Many people will hold on to unused things because they feel bad just throwing them away, others horde stuff because they are sure they will “need” it later. The bottom line is that clutter affects your attitude/ mental state and can often cause more problems than good. Did you know a clutter filled office can stifle your productivity and can make you more easily agitated? We are in the process of moving right now and we always prefer to get rid of stuff if we can. It makes moving easier!! Getting rid of clutter is easy, just follow this one simple rule “If you don’t sue it get rid of it”. This is easier said then done but it can make a huge...

The gift of life- organ donations….

Yesterday we were part of an amazing experience. A family member received a wonderful gift, a kidney. This family member has been sick for quite sometime and has been on and off the transplant list over the course of years. Thursday the call came, "We have a kidney that is a perfect tissue match, would you like it?" So we got in the car and drove down to the valley to support our family. The surgery went so well and the benefits are already very apparent. Organ donations and transplants are so amazing and I don't know why more people don't donate. I am personally an organ donor because I believe that there is no point taking all my viable parts with me when I am already gone. If something good could...

Share a square

Last month I crocheted and knitted several squares and sent them to Shelly @ this eclectic life.com. Shelly is calling for people to knit and crochet six inch squares, send them to her and her volunteers will join them together making blankets that will be donated to a camp that comforts and entertains young cancer sufferers. Shelly has posted photos of all the squares she has received and I am very proud to have participated in this project. I will probably make and send a few more squares just for fun. Share a square is a great cause and its a small way for everyone to make a huge difference! I am now taking donations of yarn that I will crochet into squares for Shelly to use in her blankets. Surprisingly,...

Crochet a granny square

I am crocheting squares for Shelly's Afghans for cancer blankets. I thought it would be beneficial for others to have a video reference on how to crochet squares for afghan blankets. I found a very helpful site that explains the pattern (crochet cabana) for granny squares but as a beginner I had trouble understanding the pattern. I thought it would be helpful for others to have a video reference when trying to learn how to crochet granny squares.. Now everyone can crochet squares and participate in afghans for cancer. Here is the videos: [youtube SBUqz4Moxq0 Make a slip knot] The above video shows how to make a slip knot in preparation for making your chain.   [youtube 9a4NM1TK4Wk Chain six] After the slip knot you need to chain six stitches.
