Consider mulching them well during their first winer… Mulch will keep them warmer and will provide a nice barrier for them from the ice and snow.. I use smashed leaves and wood chips.

Tulips need a chilling period before they will bloom again. Do you live in an area the freezes? Do you get snow and frost? If so it is best to plant the tulips outdoors, allow the leaves to die back on their own, apply some bone meal fertilizer and they should return next spring for you.

If your area doesn’t get cold enough to chill the bulbs properly over winter you will need to artificially chill them.

I hope your mom wins! I redid my kitchen a year ago, and I have to say–the feeling of my entire home and the happiness it gives me are so amazing I can’t even describe it. My friends come into my house and say the whole house feels so much happier and full of energy.

p.s. I’ve been meaning to ask you about tulips. I got 3 potted tulips for my birthday, they are finished blooming and the leaves are turning yellowish. Can I plant them in the ground yet? Or should I keep the bulbs in cold storage until fall? I hate to let the bulbs die… if that’s possible. Thanks!
