The Ryder Family Farm Can Accept SNAP Benefits
GOLCONDA – Eating fresh, local food is about to get easier for some families in Southern Illinois! Starting this Saturday, June 10th 2017 at the weekly Golconda Farmer’s Market, The Ryder Family Farm will be accepting SNAP EBT cards as form of payment for the foods they farm for the community.
The USDA’s Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), formerly known as the Food Stamp Program helps reduce food insecurity and hunger for low-income households. Households in the SNAP program can now use EBT (Electronic Benefit Transfer) cards to purchase fresh produce and other food items from The Ryder Family Farm of Southern Illinois.
The Ryder Family Farm sells homemade goat milk soaps, pasture raised eggs, seasonal market produce and also offers a summer CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) share program that secures members prepaid, reserved food baskets available for pickup during a 16 week period from July to October.
The Ryder Family Farm, run by first generation farmers Nathan and Talina Ryder, is now in it’s 4th year of operation. On June 1st, 2017, The Ryder’s moved their entire farm operation from Simpson, IL to Golconda, IL in pursuit of a dream- to grow their farm offerings and serve more of the community. Ensuring they could serve low-income households is part of their growth process.
“Being able to accept EBT cards was a major priority for us. So many of the folks in our community rely on SNAP to feed their families and they absolutely deserve the freshest, local produce to nourish their bodies.” Talina Ryder explains. “Eating clean food and enjoying better health shouldn’t be luxury for some, it’s everyone’s right.” Talina Ryder adds.
The Ryder Family Farm attends the weekly Golconda Farmers’ Market on Saturdays from 8am-1pm (May-September each year) plus they welcome customers to pick up prepaid items on the farm throughout the week.
