Childlike Joy

In Flagstaff, AZ we got about 3 feet of snow in 2 days. This was the long awaited and very overdue first big snow of the winter (in March). It was a lot of things all at once. It was scary because I had to drive home from Sedona in it Saturday night after working (29 miles took me 2 hours). I drove off the road, got the truck stuck in snow and had several times when the truck was sliding around on the road.

Once I finally got home and rested the snow storm became amazing and beautiful. Over the night we got about another foot or foot and a half of snow. That morning kids were sledding, dogs frolicking and adults were even getting in on the action. I took my cats out in the snow (they love every chance they get to leave the house) and took pictures. Someone in the neighborhood built about 10 mini snow men and lined their brick wall fence with them. The snow brought childlike joy to everyone. I was really surprised by it and just sort of kicked back and observed everything. Nobody was grumpy or rude in town, the roads were calm, kids were playing and having fun, adults were laid back and happy… The snow transformed my town into a fairytale for a brief time. It was so nice!

Today is a snow day. Not because of falling snow, the roads are just too icy for safe travel. The road crews are not going to be able to clear things completely until late afternoon. I feel things starting to go back to normal now. The temperature is going up now (its forty degrees now) and people are getting back to the daily grind. They aren’t stopping to enjoy the beauty that is all around us anymore…

Why do so many choose to live life this way?? Sometimes we get so caught up in daily life that we forget to stop and enjoy the treasures that are all around us. I am going to fight the urge today! I will not ignore the wonderful things that are all around me. I want to experience childlike joy today; this is the choice I have made.

I am enjoying my cup of coffee. The birds are singing and feeding out on my patio right now. The snow covered surroundings are so beautiful. Some kids are out sledding in the snow outside my apartment. Their laughter and joy is refreshing. My cats are sunning themselves and my plants are growing. I am going to try to build a snowman on my patio today. How are you enjoying life today??
