Reuse and repurposing: Our goal- Throwing less into dumps

There are many ways to recycle, reuse and conserve from day to day. You just have to look at things differently. As I become more and more earth friendly I discover new ways to reporpose, reuse and recycle.
For me, a focus on repourposing and reuse has been what we’ve continued to expand on. Can you believe this family of 4 only fills a regular treash can with dump-bound trash about every 2-3 weeks?
We’ve dramatically reduced the about of stuff that is dump-bound by:
  1. Composting kitchen scraps or giving it to our rabbits & chickens.
  2. Hauling our own recycling to a recycling center once a month.
  3. Basing our buying choices partly on product packaging.
  4. Buying less throwaway stuff, spending less money.
  5. Reusing things like mad.

Since it’s earth day, I’d like to share some of what we’ve got going on here at home where reuse is concerned and I’d love for you to share what you having going too. The more ideas we compile the “greener” we’ll all be right? Continue reading Reuse and repurposing: Our goal- Throwing less into dumps

Auntie Anne’s is celebrating 25 years! #pretzelperfect

Auntie Anne’s is celebrating 25 years with a twist on the classic, introducing the new Honey Whole Grain pretzel.

This makes my mouth water, I’d love to scarf a few Auntie Anne’s pretzels right now! Unfortunately, my belly doesn’t share this sentiment now that we are gluten intollerant.

However, that is no reason why my gluten eating followers should miss out on a sweet offer for some free Auntie Anne’s pretzels in celebration of their birthday… Continue reading Auntie Anne’s is celebrating 25 years! #pretzelperfect

Holiday Stocking Stuffers Anyone? #pgstocking

Is your holiday shopping complete? I am happy to report that ours basically is, except for stocking stuffers (the bane of my existence!). We don’t do lots of sweets here so filling the stockings with candy isn’t the ole fallback. Instead we really have to get creative about things.

Like a typical mom, I toss lots of necessity items in the mix for the holidays. You know, socks, undies, clothing, new shoes for the baby and such… especially in the stockings! Do you? Continue reading Holiday Stocking Stuffers Anyone? #pgstocking

How does Dove conditioner work out in the Talina poof of hair?

For those of you that know me, you also know that my hair is well… INSANE.

It’s thick, corse, curly in areas and typically long (unless I am particularly annoyed with it’s weight at any given time). As a youngon I used to spend over an hour each day straightening or taming the mane when it was worn down.

Now that I have kids it’s mostly tied up in a knot on top of my head. Another reason for my lack of hair doing is the Indiana humidity… Humidity and my hair don’t mix and I’ve yet to find a product that makes my hair manageable and somewhat straight, without the use of a hot iron and lots of time spent.

This is why I was interested in trying the new Dove Damage Therapy Conditioner. Plus, I’ve always enjoyed the Dove advertising approach compaired to other beauty products. I like that they try to keep women more “real” in their ads than other beauty product makers.

So I tried out the “Intensive Repair” conditioner in my mane of tangled insanity. It smelled nice but I wasn’t particullary thrilled about the number of chemicals in the product. I’d much rather have a plain smelling product than an overly scented super chemical one.

I typically use chemical free herbal shampoo and conditioner and am typically pleased with the results I get. I am always willing to test out something more conventional with the hopes that it might calm the locks of hair and make them easier to manage.

I should also mention that I am NOT a daily shampooer when it comes to my locks. I find that less regular washing allows my hair to remain hydrated and appear less frizzy. Of course, I am very aware of oily hair and am careful to never let my hair get that way between washings.

So where the Dove conditioner was concerned, it did make my hair more silky feeling in the shower and also immediately following the shower but it definitely made my hair feel more greasy in the days following, which is a problem I typically don’t have with my more natural hair products.

The product did work well but isn’t likely something I’ll use daily (rather it will be an occasional/ special occasion product) as I found it left a buildup and made my hair more greasy feeling and looking between washings.

What is the most important quality to you in hair care products? Do you wash/ condition each day? If so, do you typically use the same products each shampoo or do you rotate them in and out?

Seriously?! An Electric Toothbrush Turned This Mouth Snob Around! #ad

Being the child of an “oral hygene professional” means I’ve always got someone on my case about my teeth and that I’ve been exposed to an array of dental products.

I remember as a kid, like in the 90’s, we had one of those old school electric toothbrushes. It was nasty and strange. The darn thing vibrated my head so bad that it made me sneeze, get a runny nose and watery eyes. I’ve never really been a fan of putting a motorized device in my mouth, not at home and not at the dentist.

I hated using that darn manual toothbrush with a passion but my mom hounded us each night and forced us to use it. The torture!

So, you can imagine my joy when my husband got his Oral-B Professional Care SmartSeries 5000 Toothbrush in the mail several months back. I was super relieved that it only came with the one toothbrush head and I tormented him about using it.  I believe the words “good luck” and “have fun with that” were used. Eventually, after his rave reviews over it I agreed to give it a try and he bought some extra toothbrush heads for us.

A decade apparently leaves much room for technological advancement because this electric toothbrush isn’t nearly as bad as I remember the torture device of my childhood being. The electric toothbrush jackhammer effect is still noticeable when you press hard while brushing but I feel like it’s not nearly as dramatic and terrible as I remember from my childhood.

The Oral-B Professional Care SmartSeries 5000 Toothbrush, in comparison with a manual brush, DOES seem to remove more junk from my teeth and leaves them feeling dental office polished which makes it feel worth all the “good vibrations”.

Weekly Winners January 12th- 18th

Here is this weeks Weekly Winners post, as with last week all photos were captured using my new Kodak Cd-1013 Digital Camera.

Here is Alexandria-Maybelle, the bunny. We have had her since way before the move to Evansville. We ended up buying her at the feed and tack store one spring while my mom was visiting us in Flagstaff. We had a bunny, Baby Bunny, prior to Alexandria-Maybelle but because of living situations (the landlord forced us to remove our unauthorized pets from the rental) we had to send her and the cats down to The Ranch to live with my mom for a few months.

Anyway Baby Bunny died (from eating apple core and seed we suspect) and we went several months, almost a year, without a bunny in the home. Then we spotted Alexandria-Maybelle. Here she is in the bottom of her giant cage near her litter box. We aren’t sure what her breed is, probably mixed.

Well, N has been talking about this bunny that was found hippity hopping through the grocery store parking lot that someone he worked with had taken in but could not keep. They were keeping it in a plastic storage bin like this oneand were not able to keep it.

It caught his eye because it was a lop ear and he has always wanted one, plus they weren’t providing it with proper living conditions. Oh and we are also suckers for rescuing pets…

We make our pet decisions together normally and during last week he brought up taking the bunny in again. I was trying hard to not get sucked in to the cuteness of the bunny or any of that because once you do you are screwed.

Don’t get me wrong having a bunny isn’t that difficult, the key is providing it with the proper cage that will both keep your home clean and also keep your pet healthy and safe. Bunnies are cute and cuddly and appealing which is why so many people try to keep them as pets. The thing is they are also animals with needs and should be considered life long additions to your family if you choose to adopt one.

Sometimes bunnies can spray pee outside the sides of a typical rabbit cage, which can in turn stain carpet or dirty walls. Plus, they need a means to get exercise if they are solely indoor rabbits and a cage should provide that unless you plan to take your bunny out of the cage every day and let it play and run. Oh and you’ll also need to supervise it while it is running the house it to insure it doesn’t chew through any power cables on on your walls or something. Lastly, just because they were once wild animals does not mean you can just leave them outside in freezing or smoldering temperatures to fend for themselves, this is just cruel.

So when N brought up the bunny thing I explained that there was no way we could afford another $100+ multilevel cage for a second rabbit. Besides sexing young rabbits is hard and putting two together that are not the same sex (and also unfixed) is just bad news. Every heard the phrase humping like rabbits? They are prolific breeders folks!

I told N that if he was set on taking the rabbit in he would have to construct a cage for the thing that was sufficient for indoor use and also that allowed for exercise. And that is had to be done within days of bringing the new bunny home. Well, let me introduce you to Boner, the bunny.

You are probably wondering “well how does she know it is a he if sexing rabbits is so hard?”. Let me just say that we slowly introduced the two rabbits yesterday and he climbed right on top of Alexandria-Maybelle and started humping her head. When I grabbed him off her his penis was hanging out which very quickly told us he is a male. Plus he has these, balls.

Young rabbits are hard to sex but once they become sexually mature it is a bit more obvious, as you can see. So Now we are keeping Boner and Maybelle separate to avoid baby rabbits, we’ll also have Boner fixed when we find a vet and get some extra money. In the meantime the rabbits will just stay close but be kept apart.

Oh and all the household members are now friends with Boner, here is a video of everyone hanging out last night. Crazy huh?

WTF, the shower curtain is making me crazy!

The rental we are in right now strangely enough came equip with shower curtains. When we first moved in the shower curtains wreaked of urine and the house hadn’t been thoroughly cleaned so we contacted the rental company and they sent out a house cleaner.

The house cleaner who barely spoke English told me they don’t clean shower curtains. Since the shower curtain came with the rental it must be returned with the rental when we are done, that means I had to deal with it! I read somewhere that throwing the shower curtain in the wash would clean it right up so I tried it, the nasty urine smell went away!

Just a few days ago the smell came back (no we aren’t peeing on it!) so I went to work cleaning the shower curtain again. I figured since the shower curtain was all clean and sparky I should also scrub down the tub and shower- you know make the whole room squeaky clean! While I was at it I got a rude surprise.

Create your own puzzles at!

The freaking shower curtain was sticking to me and no matter what I did it just kept coming for me, WTF! I guess cleaning the grime off the curtain made it extra clingy or something…

If you have a clingy shower curtain like I do you may benefit from using the ShowerBow while you shower. It is easy to install and it pushes the shower curtain away from you while you shower so you don’t have to endure a soggy shower curtain clinging to your behind while you shampoo.

A day in the life of my pants! LOL

240x180Lets see, my favorite pair of pants is my new black pair of Capri workout pants, they say “Guard” on the pant leg. I love these because they are comfortable and because they are durable.

What would a day be like for my pants? Hm, it would be hard I think. I wake up in the morning, have some coffee and then I spend about 30 minutes sitting in the car (dropping N off at work in town and driving back home). Once I get home I have some breakfast, sit on the couch and work on the computer for about an hour. So for my pants that basically means lots of sitting.

I head back into town to teach at about 10:30am, when I get to the school I dance my butt off so that means much stretching, rubbing and torture for the pants. I once had a pair of pants rip in the crotch while I was teaching, we do the splits, kick and all that fun stuff. It’s important that my pants be durable and stretchable. When I can I wear pajama pants or sweats so that I don’t ruin any good pants.

When I get home from teaching I run around the house cleaning, gardening and taking care of the house. That means my pants get dirt on them from the garden, dust from cleaning the house, soap from doing the dishes and an array of other stuff. Dockers contest wants to know what a day is like in YOUR pants, are you creative? If so turn the story of your pants into a video submission and then submit this content to the Dockers TV Commercial Contest. You could WIN and winning is FUN!

Adventures of traveling the pacific coast highway- Pt. 2- Spending to much time in the car is a bad thing!

As you can tell by the title of this post traveling by car to a distant destination is not always a good thing! spending too much time in the car makes you grumpy and irritable and you can’t make tuna fish sandwiches while driving in the car (well you shouldn’t).

N and I visit California when we are able to take a vacation. He likes the ocean I like that there is so much to do there. California is our preferred destination and we have taken many trips there, in Adventures of traveling the pacific coast highway- Pt. 1 we thought it would be a great idea to drive from Arizona to San Francisco and to camp along the pacific coast highway so we could save money on hotel costs by not using one. If we had known about the cheap hotels we probably wouldn’t have camped outside LA and had that early morning run in with the bear! If you are looking for travel information you should check out, they have an abundance of information about popular destinations and they might be able to save you some trouble/ money!

Now allow me to present Adventures of traveling the pacific coast highway part 2

After a frightful night of no sleep because somebody brought smores in to the tent we emerged from our tent, made breakfast and began packing up our camp. We had about another 8 hours to drive before we would reach our destination for the 2nd night, another camp ground along the pacific coast highway. We allowed ourselves to be amused by the close encounter of with the bear, had some breakfast and went on our way.

We went, driving along listening to music and trying to enjoy the long car ride ahead of us. After we got out of the camp ground and on to the main road we noticed many motorcyclists on the Pacific Coast Highway, it seems like a biker rally was traveling the highway or perhaps they just found riding the highway enjoyable.

Anyway, biker after biker passed us on the windy road, we weren’t going that slow and were kind of surprised by the number of bikers who were going so fast but we just stayed to the right and allowed them to fly past us.

After several miles we noticed this rather odd poof of smoke or dust on the left hand shoulder and we thought somebody had wrecked. We slowed down to offer assistance and saw that a biker had lost control of his bike, he was laying on the asphalt… his bike was hanging off the cliff!

We pulled off the road to offer our assistance, the motorcycle man was all alone and we figured we had just escaped being eaten by a bear so we had better pay the good karma forward and help this poor man.

The motorcycle man wanted help pulling his bike off the side of the cliff so N went over to help him. Motorcycles are heavy just so you know…. this bike was literally hanging off the side of the cliff and it appeared the only thing that was keeping the bike from falling was this crispy shrub. Anyway, they pulled the bike back from the edge and the we sat there and waited with the motorcycle man. He was sure his friends were coming back to get him and that they noticed he was no longer with them.

I noticed that motorcycle man’s pantalones (pants- I am weird sorry) were torn and bloody and I offered to clean him up. We were prepared travelers with our first aid kit in the car so we took a look at his knee and began cleaning it up.

Motorcycle man was more concerned with “not looking like he had wrecked” then he was regarding his knee, by the way his knee was like roast beef! We warned him that he was in shock and not feeling the full extent of his injury, we ripped up a t-shirt so we could tie his knee off. It was bleeding and was ripped open, very deeply. We offered him some ibuprofen for the pain and said we would drive him into town so he could get to a hospital.

He declined our offer and refused to leave this bike behind.. He was crazy for being so stubborn and we couldn’t believe he was not worried about his injury. Anyway he wanted to call his buddy so that he could come back with a truck to rescue him and his bike.

Although we did not agree with biker man’s priorities when his friend returned to assist him we wished them well and continued on our way.
